Louth Constituency

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Louth is the most economically and culturally vibrant County in Ireland . It has the best road, rail and communications infrastructure on the island, beautiful countryside and a cultural confidence second to none.

I have now represented the constituency for 19 years in Dáil Éireann and, working with my constituents, we have made major strides forward in that period.

When I was first elected to Dáil Éireann, Louth was one of the most economically depressed Counties in Ireland , emigration was endemic and the conflict in the North hindered any prospect of improvement. The County has been transformed since that time and I see my job as ensuring it stays that way.

One of the County's great advantages its strategic location between Dublin and Belfast , putting us right at the centre of the all-island economy.

As a public representative, I have worked hard to break down differences between North and South politically and economically; Today, in reality, there is no longer an economic border between Louth and our Northern neighbours Armagh .

The oppressive watchtowers are gone. After years of campaigning I was delighted to be the Minister who presided over the final demolition of the watchtowers which used to blight our landscape.

Today we look at tourism, planning, economic development, health and many other issues on a cross-border basis. The all-island economy is the key to our future growth and I am determined to work with my constituents to ensure Louth's prime role in that economy.
